The Supreme Court refused emergency intervention Thursday in a Michigan ballot fight over a proof-of-citizenship voting amendment. Americans for Citizen Voting wanted the justices to leapfrog the state courts and force the measure onto November ballots after the Board of State Canvassers found only 626 of 1,000 sampled signatures valid, and the state's Bureau of Elections found 612.

Justice Kavanaugh denied the application alone, without referring it to the full court or explaining his reasoning. The board had urged rejection, noting the group's filing leaned on its raw signature count while skating past the invalidation numbers.

The group blamed the board for a five-month delay and accused the Michigan Supreme Court of stalling too, filing at the U.S. Supreme Court just before Friday's ballot finalization deadline.

Skipping the state courts and going straight to Washington on a Thursday deadline is the legal equivalent of trying to cut the line at the DMV by yelling louder. The board did its counting, the counting came up short, and a single justice looked at the math and said no thanks. Sometimes the system just works the boring way it's supposed to.
