Arizona physicians unionize at Banner Health

Outpatient clinicians at Banner Health, Arizona's largest employer, voted 149-66 to join the Union of American Physicians and Dentists, the first unionization of physicians in state history. The roughly 200 physicians, physician assistants and nurse practitioners work across 31 Phoenix Valley clinics serving over 500,000 patients annually.

Clinicians cite burnout, unpaid overtime, and a loss of autonomy — operations staff, not doctors, now set appointment lengths as short as 15 minutes. A new policy allowing Banner to cut base pay by up to $15,000 a year for missed revenue goals, on top of existing patient-care metrics, was described as the final push toward organizing.

Banner opposed the union publicly, arguing on its website that a contract is not guaranteed and that unions cannot fix workforce shortages or infrastructure problems. One organizer says she was pushed out days after giving notice once managers learned of her union support, and a separate unfair-labor-practice complaint is pending before the NLRB.
