Canada's Supreme Court ruled in favor of a federal candidate who lost her district by exactly one vote after discovering that mail-in ballots had been stamped with the wrong address, preventing some electors from casting them at all.

The lower court had dismissed her appeal, but the top court found that error serious enough to compromise the results and violate the Canada Elections Act, overturning that dismissal.

One vote is about as thin a margin as democracy offers, and it turns out a wrong address stamp is plenty to swing it. It took the country's highest court to say what most people would call obvious: if the mail never got where it was going, the voters never really got their say. Small mistakes in big systems have a way of finding the exact moment they matter most.
