Tyler Boebert, 21, was sentenced to 20 days in jail with work release after pleading guilty to attempted identity theft connected to a spree of car break-ins in Rifle, Colorado in early 2024. Police tied him to the case after a victim's stolen debit card was used at gas stations, a McDonald's, and an online store before being rejected at a Starbucks, and surveillance footage caught him in a distinctive hoodie.

He originally received a deferred sentence on the identity theft charge, but violated probation after pleading guilty to misdemeanor child abuse and neglect charges stemming from his toddler being found wandering unattended twice. His attorney told the court the child had been in a “Lewis and Clark phase” and that Boebert has since taken steps to prevent it happening again.

Rep. Lauren Boebert asked the court to let her son continue working to support his child, and the sentence was structured to run concurrently with a related Garfield County case. The judge noted that new charges filed against him in August, three counts of sexual exploitation of a child, don't factor into her sentencing because he is presumed innocent.

✒ FROM THE EDITORIAL DESK
A toddler wandering off twice while unsupervised isn't a phase, it's a warning, and it took a judge and two counties to spell that out. The defense calling it a “Lewis and Clark phase” is the kind of line that sounds cute in a courtroom and a lot less cute if you're the neighbor who found the kid in the street. Twenty days with work release is a light tap for a rap sheet that keeps growing every few months.
