Senate Judiciary ranking member Dick Durbin sent GOP Chairman Chuck Grassley a letter demanding records and an apology to former special counsel Jack Smith after Sen. Eric Schmitt displayed a poster at a Sept. 29 hearing purporting to show Smith's texts about attending an Atlanta Hawks game, accusing him of perjury and calling him a ‘dirtbag.’ Smith said in real time he had actually attended a University of Maryland versus Iowa Hawkeyes women's basketball game to see Caitlin Clark, and Sen. Amy Klobuchar publicly clarified Schmitt had confused the Hawks with the Hawkeyes.
Durbin says committee Democrats were never given copies of the poster to review and that Schmitt has continued publicly calling Smith a liar and ‘dirtbag’ since the hearing despite the correction. Grassley responded on social media by saying Smith should apologize for collecting records on Iowans and other Americans, without addressing the apology request directly; his office pointed to prior comments alleging Smith targeted Republican organizations and members of Congress.
