A report from Surfers Against Sewage found all nine of England's water companies failed to report sewage discharges within the legally required 60 minutes more than 50,000 times in the first half of 2026, including at least 7,450 spills on dry days when no storm should have triggered them.
Last year water companies discharged sewage for over 1.8 million hours total, an average of 5,100 hours a day, while bathing-water sewage alerts stayed posted for 24,771 days combined; 1,687 people reported getting sick from water contact between January and August 2026.
Defra says it is driving the biggest overhaul of the water sector in a generation and promises a strengthened Water Bill, while Water UK countered that the industry is the most transparent in the world and is tripling investment in treatment works.

✒ FROM THE EDITORIAL DESK
Calling yourself the most transparent water industry in the world while sitting on fifty thousand unreported discharges is like a man bragging about his honesty right after you catch him hiding the receipt. The government's promise to overhaul the sector in a generation is the kind of timeline that outlives everyone currently in office making it. Meanwhile the water keeps running the same way it always has, straight downhill and straight past the rules.
