Only a few hundred Timor green pigeons may remain. There is still time to save them

Researchers estimate only 100 to 500 Timor green pigeons remain worldwide, spread across eight sites, based on a new study drawing on more than 1,400 days of field surveys from 2002 to 2025.

Only one site, Nino Konis Santana National Park in Timor-Leste, is thought to hold more than 50 birds, and the species may already be functionally extinct in Indonesia. Hunting continues even inside protected areas, which lack funding and staff to stop it, while forest conversion further erodes habitat.

The species has been listed as endangered since 2000, yet dedicated recovery work and sustained investment have remained limited. It was not among the 100 species chosen for the $200 million Phoenix Species Project backed by Re:wild and the Bezos Earth Fund.
