Construction company accused of scamming Florida residents sued by AG Uthmeier

Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier announced a lawsuit against Evolve Construction and Evolve Construction & Restoration, plus six executives, accusing them of scamming at least 80 residents out of over $1 million in insurance payments after Hurricanes Ian and Milton. The suit, filed in Lee County's 20th Judicial Circuit, alleges the companies used predatory contracts and operated without required home solicitation permits.

Uthmeier said the companies went door to door in storm-hit neighborhoods promising roof repairs and mold remediation, then took insurance payouts without finishing the work, in some cases leaving liens on the damaged properties. Calls by the Florida Phoenix to the company's advertised headquarters and four Florida offices went unanswered.

Uthmeier, appointed to the post and now facing voters in November against Democrat José Javier Rodriguez, used the press conference to also praise Governor DeSantis's hurricane response and local law enforcement.

Taking a homeowner's insurance check and walking off before the first shingle goes up is about as low as a con gets, right up there with selling flood insurance on a boat. The lawsuit itself looks like a straightforward, decent use of an attorney general's office. Just notice how neatly the press conference slid from 'we caught scammers' into campaign season praise for the boss who gave him the job.
