Jason Arday, who in 2023 became Cambridge's youngest Black professor, was found dead at a London address on Friday, days after resigning his sociology of education post amid weeks of media scrutiny over alleged plagiarism and disputed claims about his athletic and fundraising achievements. Police said the death was being treated as unexpected but not suspicious, and did not name him publicly per policy.

Prime Minister Andy Burnham called the death "a tragedy on so many levels" and urged reflection rather than rushed judgment. A friend said Arday had sent a voice note saying he "felt he couldn't go on," and his family said in a statement he had faced a "campaign of harassment" and "sustained abuse" since taking the Cambridge post.

The allegations began with a researcher's critique alleging over 100 passages of Arday's 2015 PhD thesis closely resembled another scholar's earlier paper; Arday denied plagiarism but admitted some mistakes. Media scrutiny then extended to his claims of raising £5.5 million for charity through marathon feats and his account of childhood developmental delays, some of which he later revised.

Cambridge, which had initially defended Arday, reversed course and opened an investigation into his qualifications and appointments; vice chancellor Deborah Prentice said the university will also review its senior hiring practices. Reactions have split sharply, with figures including London Mayor Sadiq Khan and the National Education Union's Daniel Kebede calling the scrutiny racially motivated, while others, including former home secretary James Cleverly, argued Cambridge itself bore responsibility for elevating him unqualified.
