Democratic Sen. John Fetterman appeared in a surprise, unadvertised video at the Republican midterm convention in Dallas, praising GOP Sen. Dave McCormick and pledging the two Pennsylvanians would keep working with President Trump. Filmed in front of a U.S. Steel mill in Braddock, Fetterman called himself a 'common-sense Democrat' and said he rejects 'the extremes and socialism.'

The video also served to introduce McCormick before his convention speech, with Fetterman calling him a senator who 'gets the job done' and a 'great friend' despite the party divide. Fellow Democrats reacted sharply: Rep. Brendan Boyle renewed his 'Trump's favorite Democrat' label, and Rep. Sarah McBride compared speaking at the convention to 'boarding the Titanic after it hit the iceberg.'

The appearance follows reporting that former Fetterman aides described him to the Wall Street Journal as indifferent to his job, and comes amid his continued distancing from progressive Democrats over issues including the war in Gaza.

A senator cutting a friendly video for the other team's pep rally isn't a scandal, it's just a fence he's decided to sit on out in plain view. His own party's response tells you they've noticed which side of that fence gets more of his weight lately. Whether that's principle or positioning, only he knows, and he's not in a hurry to say.
