Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer signed an executive order declaring a state energy emergency and temporarily suspending penalties for farm and logging vehicles using untaxed dyed diesel on public highways, through Dec. 31, mirroring a similar federal order from President Trump issued Oct. 5. Average diesel in Michigan was running near $6.49 a gallon, nearly double the price from a year earlier.
Industry groups including the Michigan Farm Bureau and Michigan Association of Timbermen had requested the relief, estimating it could save roughly 50 cents a gallon, though the association's director noted it does nothing for operators without trucks on the road and that deeper price relief is still needed.

✒ FROM THE EDITORIAL DESK
Fifty cents a gallon is real money at harvest time, but calling it relief when the price doubled in a year is a bit like handing someone a band-aid and calling it a cast. Whitmer gets credit for doing the thing actually in her power to do, which is mostly just getting out of the way. The folks without a truck on the road are still waiting on somebody to notice them.
