Supporters of Democrat Will Lawrence and Republican Rep. Tom Barrett held dueling demonstrations Monday in downtown Lansing, 31 days before the general election and a day before their WKAR-TV debate. The pro-Lawrence group, Spartans for Will, criticized Barrett's record on AI data centers, healthcare, and his vote for what they called the 'Big Beautiful Bill,' with student organizer Camden Kimmel calling him a 'status quo politician.'
Lawrence's spokesperson accused Barrett of a 'cost-raising record' and rubber-stamping Trump's agenda. Barrett supporters, including Michigan GOP officials, counter-protested by raising Lawrence's democratic socialist ties and arrest record from pipeline protests; they declined interview requests, and Barrett's campaign did not respond to a request for comment.

Two sets of partisans stood on the same sidewalk yelling past each other the day before a debate, which is democracy working exactly as advertised and about as illuminating as a barn dance argument over whose tractor is louder. One side showed up to talk and the other showed up to not talk to reporters, which tells you plenty about who thinks their case holds up under questions. The actual debate, where both men have to answer in real time, will matter more than any sign held up outside an office.
