The UK government is consulting until late October on whether to cut its target of 80% EV sales by 2030, potentially down to 50%, after pressure from car manufacturers who warned the goal was too costly and risked jobs.

Options include lowering the target while allowing more hybrid sales to fill the gap, or keeping 80% but extending the deadline to 2034; the outright ban on new pure petrol or diesel sales past 2030 remains in place.
