Arizona State University hockey player Matthew Mayich collapsed during an August practice in rising heat and remains in critical condition after what his family's lawyer called exertional heat stroke. Seven teammates have alleged in a letter that the workout ran longer than the school reported and that required precautions, including an immersion tub, on-field heat measurement, and shade breaks, were not in place.

Head coach Greg Powers was placed on paid leave more than a month after the incident. Experts note that established best practices for preventing heat stroke exist but are inconsistently applied, pointing to a University of Iowa band member's death from heat exposure just a week later as evidence the risk extends well beyond athletes.
