Map Shows States Hit by 1.7M-Pound Sugar Recall as FDA Sets Risk Level

United Sugar Producers and Refiners voluntarily recalled about 1.27 million pounds of light brown sugar and 426,500 pounds of powdered sugar on August 19 after discovering possible wheat kernel contamination, an undeclared allergen.

The FDA this week classified the recall as Class II, meaning any health effects are considered temporary or reversible rather than severe. Affected products, sold under the United, Crystal Sugar and Good & Gather names, reached eight states: Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Minnesota, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Texas.

Target says none of the affected Good & Gather inventory reached its stores or distribution centers. Consumers are urged to check batch numbers between MHD26223 and MHD26229 and return or discard matching products.

Somebody at a sugar plant let wheat wander into bags of something that is supposed to be, by definition, just sugar. That's not a seasoning mishap, that's a facility with a hole in its process big enough to drive a forklift through. Good on the company for calling it in, but it's worth asking how long that hole was there before anybody noticed.
