The FDA acknowledged this month a nationwide shortage of estradiol patches used to treat menopause symptoms, and said all six manufacturers are working to expand production. The agency's release credits rising demand and 'increased interest in menopause treatment' as the driver.
The American Society of Health-System Pharmacists first flagged the shortage in January, two months after the FDA removed the treatment's longtime black-box warning; as recently as May, the FDA's own shortage list didn't include the patches at all. Meanwhile, the National Menopause Foundation counted more than 60 pieces of related legislation introduced nationwide this year, with 26 states enacting menopause laws since 2019.

An agency confirming a shortage that pharmacists had been flagging for months is a bit like the fire department showing up to announce the smoke. Nobody's disputing that six manufacturers scrambling is better than six manufacturers not scrambling, but the timeline here does the talking better than the press release does. Women waited a long stretch between the pharmacy noticing empty shelves and Washington saying the word out loud.
