Trump and Zelenskyy met at the U.N. General Assembly's high-level week in New York, with reports indicating Trump pressed Zelenskyy to halt strikes on Russian oil refineries, partly amid rising global diesel prices linked to the U.S. war in Iran. Zelenskyy has said Ukraine would accept an energy ceasefire only if Russia also stops striking Ukraine's energy and civilian infrastructure.

CNN reported Trump planned to tell the Assembly the U.S. has never been more powerful and respected and to claim credit for resolving crises his predecessors avoided, despite ongoing wars in both Ukraine and Iran that remain unresolved. French President Macron, in his final U.N. appearance before leaving office, pledged to pursue a moratorium on strikes against Ukrainian energy infrastructure and push for serious peace negotiations before winter.

Zelenskyy is scheduled to address the Assembly Wednesday, with Iran's president speaking the same day and Netanyahu on Thursday amid separate friction with New York's mayor over Gaza.

A man can stand at a podium and call himself the most respected president in history, and the only cost is whatever it costs the room to keep a straight face. The actual war is still going, the refineries are still burning on somebody's schedule, and the ceasefire on the table only works if both sides agree to it, which as of this meeting they hadn't. Big speeches are cheap. Refineries are not.
