James Carville said on a podcast that the Republican Party's first-ever midterm convention, dubbed Trump-a-palooza and set for Dallas next week, could backfire on the GOP given how central Donald Trump is to the event. He noted dozens of Republicans have already said they will skip it, and pointed to reporting that photo opportunities with the president will cost roughly $88,600.

Carville called the convention a giant money-making operation and pushed back on the idea that journalists should avoid giving it coverage, arguing instead that reporters should cover it extensively because it will excite and motivate Democratic turnout more than anything else on the calendar.

✒ FROM THE EDITORIAL DESK
Charging tens of thousands of dollars for a photo with the guy headlining your own party's convention is a strange way to project confidence about where things stand a few months out. Carville's advice, cover it and let people see it, is really just a bet that some things don't need spin, they just need a camera pointed at them. Whether Republicans staying home from their own party proves him right is the kind of thing you find out in November, not from a podcast in September.
