IndyCar drivers raced a 1.66-mile course past the Capitol and across the National Mall twice on Sunday in the Freedom 250 Grand Prix, the finale of a series of anniversary events coordinated and promoted by President Trump. Just over two dozen drivers hit speeds up to 190 miles per hour over 147 laps, with Trump himself waving the green flag after his motorcade traveled the course beforehand.

Military flyovers including a B-2 bomber and Air Force One preceded the race, and thousands watched from fencing along the route, many admitted via a free ticket drawing. The Freedom 250 series is separate from the bipartisan America250 commission Congress created in 2016 for the same anniversary.

Funding for Freedom 250 came mostly from private contributions, including primary sponsor Penske Corp., with some federal money arriving via last year's reconciliation law. Attendees interviewed, including a VIP-package couple from Salt Lake City, credited the president personally for organizing the event.

Nothing says '250 years of independent self-governance' quite like a semiquincentennial celebration that runs parallel to, rather than through, the commission Congress actually built for the occasion. The president waved the flag, the bomber did its flyover, and a Michigan auto-parts company picked up much of the tab — a fittingly private-public blend for an administration that prefers its patriotism sponsored.
