The FDA has elevated a recall of nearly 1.6 million dozen cage-free eggs from Midwest Poultry Services in Texas to its highest-risk Class I designation, citing a salmonella outbreak that has sickened 98 people across 17 states and hospitalized 26 since November.

The company found the contamination through its own monitoring and stopped shipping fresh eggs from the Texas farms in late July, but recalled cartons with best-by dates through August 17 remain on shelves at Kroger, Brookshire Grocery, and smaller retailers across the South and Southwest.

This lands amid a broader run of American food-safety trouble, including a cyclosporiasis outbreak tied to lettuce that has topped 13,000 cases and a separate salmonella recall of jalapeño products sold in 26 states.

The full dispatch is available from the source below.

✒ FROM THE EDITORIAL DESK
An agency bragging about reclassifying a recall to its most severe tier is still an agency admitting the less-severe tier didn't stop the eggs from shipping for weeks. The FDA also announced a fix to an ingredient-notification loophole this week, which it describes as falling short of the sweeping food-safety overhaul it promised — a rare moment of the government grading its own homework honestly, if only by accident.
