A correspondent for Russian state broadcaster VGTRK chased Volodymyr Zelensky down a New York street during the UN General Assembly, repeatedly shouting in Russian to ask when he'd visit Moscow, a trip the Kremlin has set as a precondition for a one-on-one meeting with Putin. Zelensky ignored him for a while, then answered over his shoulder that he'd arrive by rocket, with an obscenity attached that didn't fully survive the recording.

The exchange was caught on video and circulated widely, offering a tidier summary of the state of Russia-Ukraine diplomacy than any actual negotiating session has managed lately.

When the precondition for peace talks is a visit that both sides know isn't happening, the diplomacy has already left the building and only the theater remains. A man getting chased down a sidewalk by a state propagandist and answering with a joke about rockets is at least an honest summary of where things stand. Nobody watching that clip mistook it for progress.
