Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz visited troops in southern Syria and reiterated Israel will keep forces there as long as it perceives 'threats,' territory it has held since Bashar Assad's fall in December 2024 in what was previously a UN-patrolled buffer zone.

Syria's foreign ministry called the visit a 'flagrant violation' of its sovereignty and urged international action, following Israel's earlier strike on the Abu Duhur air base, which Israel said targeted a Turkish attempt to entrench itself there; Turkey denied visiting the site.

Israel has conducted hundreds of strikes and repeated incursions into Syria since Assad's ouster, and military chief Lt. Gen. Eyal Zamir separately visited the zone last week vowing the same open-ended presence.

✒ FROM THE EDITORIAL DESK
Telling another country's president to look out his window and see your army parked on his mountain is a bold definition of a temporary security measure. The zone has outlasted the regime it was meant to buffer against, which is usually how permanent occupations describe themselves at the start.
