Kim Jong Un named Kim Song Gi as North Korea's new defense minister, moved predecessor No Kwang Chol to head the Military Industry Department, and reinstated Pak Jong Chon as vice chairman of the Central Military Commission, Reuters reported.

The reshuffle lands as Russia has reportedly asked North Korea for more powerful KN-30 ballistic missiles, according to Ukrainian military intelligence, and as Pyongyang has expanded its troop presence in Russia to roughly 8,500 personnel, including drone operators capable of hitting targets in Ukraine, most stationed in Kursk Oblast.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said in July that Ukraine had intelligence Russia was seeking another 30,000 North Korean troops by fall.

✒ FROM THE EDITORIAL DESK
Personnel reshuffles are usually boring until you notice who's asking for missile upgrades in the same news cycle. Whatever internal logic drives Pyongyang's cabinet chairs, the external logic is not subtle: closer to Moscow, deeper into the war, further from anyone pretending this is just domestic housekeeping.
