Airports: Online Information Is Widely Available for General Aviation Fuel Prices but Not for Required Fees

GAO made covert calls to 45 fixed base operators at 40 airports and compared the answers to what those same businesses post online, finding fuel prices generally available and accurate within about 50 cents a gallon.

Required service fees, however, were often missing from FBO websites even when staff readily quoted them by phone.

Regulators reported no formal complaints or enforcement actions, and pilot groups said they were largely satisfied despite flagging gaps around event-based fees.

An industry that can price gasoline to the penny online apparently finds fee transparency logistically impossible — right up until a GAO investigator calls and gets a straight answer in seconds. Convenient how the opacity always lands on the charges, never the prices.
