The column surveys Byron Donalds' gubernatorial run against David Jolly, framing it against three decades of unbroken Republican control of Florida's legislature and governorship. It cites AAA figures on diesel and gasoline price increases, a Guardian poll finding 95% of Americans see an affordability crisis, and a January grand jury finding that the DeSantis administration ran a 'sophisticated scheme' diverting $10 million in Medicaid settlement funds through Hope Florida Foundation and various nonprofits.

The piece notes DeSantis subsequently elevated several officials involved in that scheme to attorney general, U.S. Senate, an appellate judgeship, and his own chief of staff role. Donalds is quoted pledging to build on DeSantis's record, while the column also cites rankings placing Florida first in identity theft reports per capita.

✒ FROM THE EDITORIAL DESK
A grand jury calling something a 'sophisticated scheme' is not a metaphor, it is a legal finding, and rewarding the people involved with judgeships and Senate seats is the kind of thing that used to end careers instead of starting new ones. If diesel is six dollars and rent won't budge, promising four more years of the same recipe is a strange way to fix supper. Voters get to decide in November whether that promotion pattern looks like success or just looks familiar.
