House Democrats' campaign chief Suzan DelBene said she expects her party to retake a House majority in November, pointing to Republican super PAC spending in 26 of 38 contested districts as evidence voters are shifting toward Democrats. The DCCC added six candidates to its target list Monday, bringing its total targeted races to 46, and Cook Political Report currently rates 43 districts as competitive out of 435.
NRCC Chairman Richard Hudson countered that Republican candidates are 'on offense,' citing recruits with military and business backgrounds and a platform of lower taxes and border security. Cook's House editor estimated Democrats could end up with 220 to 230 seats, which would be a majority on either end of that range but a narrow one at the low end.
The magic number for control remains 218; Republicans currently hold exactly that many seats to Democrats' 214, with one independent and two vacancies rounding out the chamber.
