President Trump has nominated outgoing Texas Rep. Wesley Hunt as ambassador to Saudi Arabia, the White House announced Monday, transmitting the nomination to the Senate for consideration. Hunt, 44, had been expected to leave Congress after placing a distant third in Texas's GOP Senate primary this year, capturing about 14% of the vote.

The posting comes as the administration deepens ties with the kingdom, including a July nuclear energy deal that lawmakers worry doesn't sufficiently block uranium enrichment, and as Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman presses Trump to confront Houthi militants who seized a key Yemeni port.

Hunt was the most absent member of the House this session, missing roughly 26% of votes, which he attributed to his Senate campaign. He also drew scrutiny for hosting Andrew and Tristan Tate in his Capitol office days before their arrest on trafficking and sexual exploitation charges.
