China's Ambassador to Chile, Niu Qingbao, used a Sofofa seminar marking 20 years of the Chile-China Free Trade Agreement to denounce unnamed nations that invoke national security to justify tariffs and sanctions, a clear if unspoken reference to the United States.

He touted trade growth from $8.68 billion in 2006 to $62.84 billion last year and a 150-fold rise in Chinese investment stock, while rejecting U.S. Section 301 overcapacity accusations as cover for American competitiveness problems.

Qingbao closed by urging Chile to 'resist' external interference in bilateral cooperation, as Chilean Foreign Minister Francisco Pérez Mackenna separately praised China's role in electrifying Santiago's bus fleet.

✒ FROM THE EDITORIAL DESK
A foreign ambassador telling a host country to resist outside interference is the sort of line that writes its own punchline, regardless of which capital it comes from. Both Washington and Beijing are happy to lecture smaller economies about sovereignty while angling for the same leverage. Chile, for its part, seems content to let two superpowers court it as long as the buses keep running.
