The White House issued a presidential message marking National Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve Week, thanking employers who hold jobs open for deployed Guard members and Reservists. The message also credits the administration's decision to mobilize the National Guard into American cities for border security and law enforcement duties with a historic drop in violent crime, citing an 18% murder decline and nearly halved carjackings in the first half of the year.

The proclamation states property crime fell over 12% and the nation is on pace for its lowest homicide rate in a century, attributing the trend to Guard troops standing watch over transit hubs and federal facilities. It closes by thanking employers for keeping paychecks and benefits flowing to service members during deployments.

✒ FROM THE EDITORIAL DESK
There is something wonderfully economical about a thank-you note to employers that spends most of its length congratulating the author. Crime statistics are notoriously multi-causal, which is precisely why a press office claiming sole credit for a century-low anything should be read with the same trust you extend to a warranty that expires when you leave the lot. The people actually owed the thanks are the ones whose jobs sat empty while the credit was being assigned elsewhere.
