CMS administrator Mehmet Oz was pushed repeatedly by CBS's Margaret Brennan on ‘Face the Nation’ to clarify Donald Trump's claim, made twice, that the MMR vaccine could be ‘lethal.’ Oz dodged several times with talk of ‘parental autonomy’ before finally stating plainly, ‘The MMR vaccine is not a lethal vaccine.’

Trump made the claim the same day he signed an executive order revising vaccine recommendations. Fact-checkers and the CDC have both said the vaccine is safe, and doctors have warned the executive order could raise fears and endanger children amid falling immunization rates and a return to school.

There is something clarifying about an administration official needing four attempts and a national broadcast to arrive at a sentence a pediatrician would consider the floor. The dodge into ‘parental autonomy’ is the tell: when the safest available answer is a true one, and you route around it anyway, you are not protecting parents, you are protecting your boss. Institutions that require a prime-time hostage negotiation to state a fact have already told you what they think facts are for.
