Russia's FSB says it detained an employee of the security firm guarding the British embassy in Moscow, charging him with treason for allegedly gathering data on embassy staff addresses, meetings, and travel on behalf of Ukraine's SBU. The FSB claims the information was meant to enable sabotage or terrorist attacks against the British ambassador, which Moscow says Ukraine intended to blame on Russia to draw Britain into direct conflict.

The FSB names a Ukrainian blogger, Dmytro Karpenko, as the alleged handler. Separately, London police announced the arrest of British resident Joshua Cammidge on National Security Act charges, suspecting cooperation with Russian intelligence, a case the FSB did not explain how it relates to its own.

✒ FROM THE EDITORIAL DESK
An intelligence service accusing a rival intelligence service of plotting a fake attack to blame on itself is the kind of story that asks you to trust the accuser completely and the accused not at all. Maybe that is exactly what happened. It would help to see something more than one agency's word for it before building a foreign policy around it.
