The White House announced that President Trump returned to South Carolina to tout what it called America First results: sweeping tax cuts, historically secure borders, falling crime, energy dominance, and a wave of private investment.

Every claim in the release is attributed to the administration itself — the largest tax cuts 'in a generation,' the 'most secure border in history' — with no independent figures, agencies, or data cited to back any of it.

The release closes by declaring that America First means South Carolina First, a slogan doing the work that statistics might otherwise have done.

A press release that cites only itself is less a report than a mirror the administration holds up and admires. If the results were as historic as advertised, someone outside the building would have noticed by now — and been quoted. Until then, 'South Carolina First' is a bumper sticker asked to do an economist's job, and the sticker is not up to it.
