A Ukrainian serviceman identified only as Roman, a drone pilot who suffered severe burns, died after being evacuated to Belgium for treatment, Belgian Defense Minister Theo Francken said, marking the first such death among Ukrainians treated in the country.

Francken said Belgium had previously treated dozens of wounded Ukrainian troops who all survived. Roman's body has been repatriated to Ukraine; Zelenskyy said in July that Ukraine has lost roughly 50,000 service members killed since the invasion began.
