A federal judge in Boston, Richard G. Stearns, dismissed the Trump administration's lawsuit seeking to claw back billions in Harvard research grants, ruling the evidence of civil rights violations was insufficient. The March lawsuit had accused Harvard of failing to protect Jewish students during pro-Palestinian protests following Hamas's October 7, 2023 attack, citing incidents of harassment and assault.

Stearns noted most incidents dated to the 2023-24 academic year with only a few from March 2025, not enough to establish a persistent pattern. The DOJ's Harmeet Dhillon said the department disagrees and is weighing next steps; this follows a separate ruling last year ordering the administration to reverse $2.6 billion in funding cuts, which a judge called an 'ideologically-motivated assault.'

Two courts, two rulings, one pattern: the government keeps bringing thin evidence to a fight it clearly wants to win on politics rather than paperwork. Harvard's task force report runs 300 pages; the government's case, per the judge, didn't have enough pages worth citing.
