Missouri's Republican-drawn congressional map, which would give the GOP seven of eight U.S. House seats, seems headed for a third trip to the Supreme Court after an Eighth Circuit hearing Thursday. The map, redrawn outside the normal decade cycle at Trump's urging, has been through a whiplash of rulings: a referendum petition suspension, a federal injunction reinstating it, a Supreme Court block, and a contempt order against Secretary of State Denny Hoskins for flip-flopping on which map to use.

The panel of three Trump-appointed judges focused heavily on whether the group leading the referendum effort, People Not Politicians, has standing to intervene, since it was not an original party to the case. Missouri's attorney argued the state supreme court's approach threatens future redistricting statewide, while opponents said voters will ultimately settle the matter at the ballot box.

✒ FROM THE EDITORIAL DESK
Four courts, two Trump-appointed judges finding different answers, and a Secretary of State held in contempt for following an order and then found redeemed for abandoning it. That's not a legal process, that's a game of hot potato with a paper map. Whatever ends up on the ballot in November, somebody in a robe changed their mind about it at least twice to get there.
