Hawaii's Supreme Court has scheduled Aug. 25 oral arguments over the disputed City Council seat of Honolulu Council Chair Tommy Waters, after eight appeals court judges, including the chief justice, recused themselves over potential conflicts of interest. Judges from Maui, Kauai, and the Big Island will sit alongside two sitting justices to hear the case.
Waters' challenger Trevor Ozawa requested an expedited schedule so a ruling comes before general election ballots are printed in mid-September. Waters said he's still weighing a formal challenge to his own disqualification; if he isn't reinstated, Ozawa and Tara Malia Gregory will appear on the general ballot instead.
