August tied hottest month on record globally, Copernicus says

Europe's Copernicus Climate Change Service reported last month tied July 2023 as the hottest month ever globally recorded, with average surface temperature at 16.96 degrees Celsius, driven partly by an emerging El Niño.

Western Europe recorded its warmest summer ever, surpassing 2003, while rivers including the Rhine, Danube, Seine, and Loire hit historic lows, forcing Hungary into emergency measures to keep a nuclear plant running and shutting down Romania's only nuclear plant.

Global temperatures crossed 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels for the first time since November 2025, with August measuring 1.65 degrees above that baseline.
