Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez told ABC's This Week that an ally described 'Woke 1.0' as crazy, prompting writer Francine Prose to reckon with agreeing on substance while disliking the term itself.

Prose cites a 2021 Atlantic essay by Tyler Austin Harper describing Bates College's mandate that every department address 'white supremacy' and 'colonial frameworks' in its curriculum, including math classes and a suggested 'oops/ouch' correction system, which contributed to Harper leaving academia.

Prose argues such heavy-handed policies made it easy for opponents to caricature progressive causes as radical, and that Democrats should focus on healthcare, childcare and economic fairness ahead of the midterms rather than litigating labels.

There is something almost quaint about a former PEN president spending several hundred words apologizing for a four-letter word before agreeing with the point it was used to make. If the actual policy critique is sound, the discomfort with vocabulary says more about branding anxiety than principle.
