Robert 'Magyar' Brovdi rose from a small volunteer drone unit on Ukraine's southern front to commanding the country's Unmanned Systems Forces, turning battlefield improvisation into reconnaissance, strike, electronic warfare, repair and logistics operations, according to official Ukrainian records.
Before the war, Brovdi spent roughly two decades in property, grain trading and corporate management, including a stint as deputy chairman of Ukraine's State Food and Grain Corporation during a disputed $1.5 billion Chinese credit-and-grain arrangement that drew scrutiny from investigative outlet Slidstvo.Info.
The available record places him in senior management at the time but does not establish personal legal liability, and he has described the episode as reputationally damaging. He and his wife also ran an arts foundation before both joined his drone unit after the full-scale invasion began.

✒ FROM THE EDITORIAL DESK
A fellow who spent twenty years managing grain contracts and now manages a drone army is at least consistent, even if the grain years come with an asterisk the size of a billion and a half dollars. The piece is careful to say nobody proved he did anything wrong there, which is the sort of sentence that makes a reader's ears perk up anyway. Building a military supply chain is hard work, and it is worth noticing when a profile does the job of separating the interesting backstory from the unproven accusation instead of mashing them together for effect.
