Prof disclosed student’s childhood abuse in book

A federal court in Pennsylvania ruled that a former graduate student can pursue privacy and emotional distress claims against a Penn State professor who published details of his childhood sexual abuse, naming him, without his consent. The student argued the professor had encouraged him to disclose the abuse in confidential seminars and knew the material was highly sensitive before using it in her book.

Claims against the university itself were dismissed, since Penn State did not publish the book and its promotional efforts did not themselves disclose the abuse.
