Charlie Kirk’s family says lapses in event security at Utah campus left him ‘helpless’

Attorneys for Charlie Kirk's family filed a notice of claim against Utah Valley University, calling his killing at a campus event last year “entirely preventable” and blaming inadequate security. The filing says six UVU police officers covered an event of roughly 3,000 people, with no outside agencies, drones, or real-time rooftop surveillance brought in, and alleges the police chief's request for six more officers was denied by then-university President Astrid Tuminez.

The family's attorneys also point to a prior exchange in which a Turning Point USA representative flagged rooftop access concerns to the police chief, who replied he had it covered; the fatal shot came from a different rooftop than the one discussed. The university has not addressed the specifics, saying only that it handles legal matters through established processes.

Tyler Robinson faces trial for aggravated murder and a possible death sentence if convicted; he has pleaded not guilty. The notice of claim is a required precursor to any lawsuit against a Utah governmental entity.
