Mykhailo Tkach, head of investigative journalism at Ukrainska Pravda, was detained in Vienna while reporting on the whereabouts of Ruslan Kravchenko, Ukraine's former prosecutor general who fled the country after anti-corruption agencies searched his office in September. The reason for Tkach's detention has not been disclosed.
Ukraine's embassy in Austria has requested information from Austrian authorities, and a Ukrainian consul managed to meet and speak with Tkach, who remains in custody. Kravchenko, for his part, has accused Ukraine's anti-corruption bureau of illegally seizing case files during the searches that preceded his resignation and departure.

✒ FROM THE EDITORIAL DESK
A journalist goes looking for a prosecutor who vanished after an anti-corruption raid, and winds up the one in custody with no explanation offered to anyone, including his own government. That is a tidy little parable about where accountability goes to hide these days: not into the open, but into whichever jurisdiction has the least interest in answering questions. The silence from Austrian authorities is doing a lot of the talking here.
