State Sen. Jake Hoffman subpoenaed Gov. Katie Hobbs and Attorney General Kris Mayes over an alleged pay-to-play scandal involving a $4 million rate hike for a foster-care contractor whose owner donated $580,000 to Hobbs and Democrats. Days before issuing the subpoenas, Hoffman's own advertising company received nearly $550,000 from Turning Point USA to help defeat Hobbs in November, according to reporting he has dismissed as the work of crooked media.
Hoffman has since backed off the hearing, appointing a former state Supreme Court justice as special counsel and shifting the matter to a colleague's committee with no new date set. Mayes' office already concluded there was insufficient evidence for criminal charges, though separate reviews continue from the state Auditor General, a county attorney and House Republicans.

A man can look into a rate hike and take a check to beat the person who signed it, but he shouldn't act surprised when the neighbors start counting. Handing the thing off to a retired judge and a colleague's committee with no date on the calendar is the oldest way there is of letting a problem cool off on the windowsill. Four separate reviews are still running, and not one of them is looking at the half million that showed up on his side of the ledger.
