Jordan Bardella, president of France's National Rally and a potential prime minister if Marine Le Pen wins in 2027, told Bloomberg that France should demand economic guarantees before continuing to fund Ukraine's war effort. He cited the U.S.-Ukraine minerals agreement as a model and proposed that European aid be tied to purchases of the donor countries' own defense industries.

Bardella framed the position as fiscal prudence, saying France is “drowning in debt” and cannot make commitments without return, while insisting this is not abandonment. Le Pen currently leads polls ahead of the 2027 presidential election.

✒ FROM THE EDITORIAL DESK
A man who wants to be prime minister is telling a country under bombardment that friendship now comes with an invoice attached. Funny how the guarantees only ever flow one direction, toward the guy holding the checkbook and the polling lead. If this is what solidarity looks like from the National Rally, Kyiv might reasonably wonder who exactly is doing whom a favor.
