A poll released by the Peter G. Peterson Foundation found that voters favor Senate candidates who have a plan to prevent an automatic Social Security benefit cut projected for 2032. Ninety-one percent supported changes to prevent the cuts, and 85% said fixing the program is more urgent given rising living costs. The foundation's CEO, Michael A. Peterson, called this ‘good news’ for bipartisan solutions.

Support splintered once specific fixes were named. Seventy-two percent backed a new 1% tax on income above $184,500, and about two-thirds favored capping a retired couple's annual benefits at $100,000. Raising the retirement age was unpopular, with 52% opposed, and 68% rejected the idea of Congress simply borrowing more to cover the shortfall.

The online survey polled 2,500 registered voters nationwide between August 20 and 27, with a 4.4 percentage point margin of error, and included special attention to the swing states of Georgia, Michigan, North Carolina, Ohio and Texas.

✒ FROM THE EDITORIAL DESK
Telling people you polled that a benefit cut sounds bad and getting 91% agreement is not exactly forecasting rain in a thunderstorm. The Peterson Foundation has spent years pushing the idea that entitlement math is scary, so a poll confirming voters want the scary math fixed lands about as shocking as a bakery reporting that people like bread. The actual useful number here, the 1% tax nobody screamed about, is buried on page six of everybody's coverage while the trend piece gets the headline.
