A columnist argues that instead of debating how to teach American history, the country should simply stop teaching it, freeing up school budgets and sparing judges the trouble of citing the past to justify present rulings.

The piece proposes replacing museum collections of Van Gogh and Botticelli with Ronald McDonald cutouts and Taylor Swift memorabilia, and reassigning history teachers to student influencer startups.

As an alternative, the column suggests everyone simply invent their own history, offering a fabricated claim about Founding Mothers and abortion as an example of how easily backstories can be manufactured to justify anything.

✒ FROM THE EDITORIAL DESK
The bit lands because it is barely a bit — plenty of institutions already treat history as optional when it is inconvenient. Proposing amnesia as policy is satire until someone in a position of actual power reads it as a memo.
