The FBI's 2025 crime report shows the largest one-year drops in violent crime and murder since estimates began in 1936, with murder down 18.5% and violent crime down 9.7%. President Trump touted the figures at the Nassau County Police Academy, claiming credit for his administration's policies and calling it the lowest murder rate since 1900.

Criminologists and the Council on Criminal Justice say the causes of the drop are unclear and likely multiple, noting crime had already been falling for several years after a pandemic-era spike. Trump previously dismissed identical FBI crime reports as 'fake' and 'a fraud' when they showed declines under Biden.
