Researchers studying the Yangambi Biosphere Reserve in the Democratic Republic of Congo found that a persistent rumor, that the CongoFlux monitoring tower extracts oxygen from the rainforest to sell in Europe, has driven real sabotage: cut cables, burned acacia seedlings, cleared protected forest, and a barricade blocking researchers. DRC's former environment minister dismissed the claims as ignorance and superstition and posted a video explaining the tower actually measures greenhouse gas exchange.

The study's authors argue the rumor persists because it explains a real grievance: international conservation money flows through Yangambi while nearby communities see little employment or benefit. A tree-planting project that villagers expected would be purchased back from them instead went nowhere, feeding suspicion that the trees, like the tower, served some hidden purpose.

Calling a community's suspicion 'ignorance' is a cheap way for an official to avoid the actual question, which is where the money went. People don't usually invent a story about stolen air unless the jobs and the funding really did skip past them on the way to somebody else's ledger. Fix the paycheck and the rumor about the tower will take care of itself.
