The International Renewable Energy Agency reports 693 gigawatts of new renewable capacity added worldwide in 2025, more than half the entire installed capacity of the United States. UN climate chief Simon Stiell called the shift to clean energy irreversible, citing nearly half a trillion dollars in avoided fossil fuel costs.
Even at that record pace, the world would reach only 10.6 terawatts by 2030, short of the 11.2 terawatt tripling goal agreed at COP28. A separate industry report found fossil fuels still supplied 86% of global energy in 2025 and that fossil fuel use kept growing in absolute terms, with rising demand from cooling needs and data centers outpacing the clean energy build-out.

Calling something irreversible while the thing it's supposed to replace keeps growing is a hopeful way to read a chart. The record numbers are real, and so is the fact that the old fuel is still doing 86 percent of the work. Momentum is nice, but it doesn't pay the bill until it actually replaces something.
