Sen. Mark Kelly told roughly 750 Iowa Democrats at the Wing Ding fundraiser that 2026 midterm control of Congress is essential to checking what he called Trump's 'corruption,' while fielding renewed questions about a possible 2028 presidential run he says he'd 'seriously consider.' Kelly, who survived a sedition accusation from Trump and Hegseth over a video urging troops to refuse illegal orders, noted a federal judge blocked Hegseth's attempt to demote his military rank and a grand jury declined to indict him.

He accused Trump of enriching himself and his family and invoked the Epstein files while calling for Democrats to win back Congress to investigate.

Outside the same venue, four Iowa Republicans ran a 'Turek's Too Liberal' tour attacking Senate Democratic nominee Josh Turek over his opposition to a federal 'bacon' bill and his absence from a state farm bill vote, arguing he'd be bad for agriculture. Turek, wrapping a 99-county tour, countered by touting his history of narrow electoral wins and 'common-sense prairie populism.'

✒ FROM THE EDITORIAL DESK
A sitting senator calling the sitting president corrupt while quietly building a 2028 shortlist résumé is not new territory for American politics, it's basically the format now. Meanwhile the opposing camp's rebuttal amounts to 'he's too liberal because he won't sign our bacon bill,' which is either the pettiest possible attack line or exactly as substantive as Iowa politics requires in an August heat wave.
